Batman is one of the Greatest of all time. He is undoubtably the greatest Superhero of all time.
Batman is so great because he has proven himself to be equal to the likes of Superman without having any superpowers. He has actually defeated Superman on his own on multiple occasions. Most of Batman's fighting skills come in the form of martial arts. Batman is a martial arts master, so he does not have any problem taking down his common foes. But no matter how physically strong or skillful he is, Batman could never face Superman or any superpowered being in hand to hand combat. This is where Batman's greatness really shows: in his intelligence.
Though he has no real superpowers, Batman's intelligence could be argued as a superpower in and of itself. Batman is the most intelligent being in the DC Universe. He has been able to outsmart universal threats, sometimes on his own. He is always surrounded by beings with powers beyond Batman's capabilities, but Batman is always the one who ends up being right about things among them. He is able to find out his opponents' weaknesses easily and quickly, which has allowed him to defeat beings such as Superman, Brainiac, and even Darkseid. He is smart enough to understand that superpowered beings all have weaknesses, which he knows should be known as these beings hold much power that can easily be left unchecked, even if they claim to be used for good. Being the only non-powered member of the Justice League, Batman has realized that he cannot simply trust his team members to stay sane and on the side of good, which is why he has contingency plans for each of them. They have been proven necessary to Batman, as the members of the Justice League have all turned to the side of evil at some point in DC Comics. Ironically, the one time that Batman turned to the side of evil was when the DC Universe was in its most endangered state, showing how Batman's intelligence could never be topped. With enough planning, Batman could take down any foe.
Though Batman may seem to be the dark and brooding hero, he is one of the most reasonable ones. He knows how strong emotions could be in a person, which is the reason why he knows even the good superheroes cannot be trusted to stay good for long. His understanding of emotions is why he takes on such a menacing presence, as he wants to scare the evil out of his enemies. He uses fear as a tool against his foes, which can often be a stronger weapon than physical actions. He knows that his own emotions can get the best of him, which is why he doesn't kill people. He knows that killing people, no matter how evil they are, would make him no better than the evil that they exhibit, and killing people would only make him suscept to his anger and violence. Also in his reasonability, Batman knows when kindness is needed for a person. Batman lost his parents when he was very young, so he knows how hard life can be for people. He has shown empathy many times to those who need it, such as with most of the Robins he has had. He also takes much care for the Bat Family.
As most might know, Batman's identity is actually billionaire Bruce Wayne. Though Bruce Wayne is the man under the mask, Batman only uses Bruce Wayne for the money. The money helps Batman carry out his plans and abilities that he has. Batman isn't Bruce Wayne, Bruce Wayne is Batman.
